WORKING PRINCIPLE
Drum screens are designed in two different ways depending on the flow direction:
Wastewater enters the inside of the drum and passes outward through the perforated surface. Particles that cannot pass through the holes are retained on the inner surface. As the drum rotates, these particles are collected by mechanical scrapers or brushes and transferred to the discharge trough. This model suits industrial wastewaters with high solids loads and has low surface-clogging risk.
Wastewater is applied to the outer surface of the drum and flows inward through the perforated surface. Solids retained on the surface are lifted by drum rotation and cleaned by an automatic brush or water spray system. This system is typically used for cleaner influent streams or fine screening stages after pretreatment. For both types, drum speed is adjusted via PLC control or timer. The cleaning system operates continuously or periodically to keep the screen surface open.
