Micro disc filters are high-efficiency mechanical filtration systems used for advanced treatment and effluent filtration in wastewater treatment plants. These equipment have particle retention capability in the 5–100 micron range, at a level that classical screens and filters cannot reach. They are typically operated as the final stage at biological treatment outlet to make water suitable for reuse or discharge standards. With their compact structure, high filtration sensitivity, low energy consumption and minimum maintenance requirement, they are accepted as the modern alternative to sand filters. In addition, they provide continuous filtration thanks to the continuously operating rotating disc structure and do not need to stop for backwashing.
Micro disc filters are a compact drum system created by mounting many rotating discs on a shaft. The disc surfaces are covered with micro-porous filter cloths fitted over stainless steel or polymer material. As wastewater passes from the outer part of the drum to the inner part, suspended solids (SS) are retained on the filter surface. These particles accumulating on the filter surface create resistance to flow and the water level slowly rises. Level sensors in the system detect this difference and activate the automatic backwashing system. During backwashing, the drum slowly rotates and high-pressure clean water is sprayed from the opposite direction of the water. In this way, the filter surface continuously cleans itself and the system continues to operate continuously. Washed particles are directed from the system to the wastewater channel or sludge line. Since only a portion of the discs operate underwater during the filtration process, backwashing is done circularly only in the dirty part, which minimizes energy and water consumption.
varies between 2 and 32 according to flow requirement.
generally in the range of 1.5 m – 2.4 m.
equipped with micro-porous polyester, stainless wire mesh or nonwoven fabric options.
produced in different sensitivities such as 5 µm, 10 µm, 20 µm, 40 µm, 60 µm and 100 µm.
AISI 304, AISI 316 stainless steel or PP / HDPE
Cylindrical, leak-proof body; watertight bearing and drive system
Stainless steel, shaft bearings equipped with special waterproof bearings.
Reduced motor; operates at low speed, quietly and energy efficiently.
Spray high-pressure (2–5 bar) clean water onto the filter surface.
Taken from treated water line or clean water tank.
Collects particles released during backwashing and directs them to the sludge line.
While the drum rotates, filtration continues and backwashing is done only on a small surface area. This allows the system to operate 24/7 without stopping.
As in classical sand filters, high water amount is not required for backwashing. Backwashing is only directed to the dirty area; typical energy consumption is in the range of 0.3–0.5 kWh / 1000 m³ water.
A single micro disc can replace multiple sand filters providing the same flow. Space requirement is 5–10 times less. This feature provides great advantage especially in modernized plants.
Since the filtration opening varies between 10–100 µm, the effluent can reach <10 mg/L SS value. This quality is usually required before reuse or advanced treatment systems (UV, RO, ultrafiltration).
Filter cloths are replaceable, washing system is automatic, drum bearings are long-lasting. This reduces human intervention in the system to almost zero.
All metal parts are made of stainless steel, moving parts are protected with special seals suitable for water-contact environment. Chemical resistance can be increased with HDPE or GRP body options.
It can be used as the final stage in new plants as well as mounted as retrofit in place of sand filter in existing plants.
Micro disc filters are next-generation mechanical filtration systems that replace classical sand filters. Thanks to their precise porous disc structure, they retain fine particles and suspended solids in water with high efficiency. With their compact design, low energy requirement, self-cleaning feature and long-lasting mechanical structure, they are the most efficient effluent filtration solution both in newly established plants and in modernization projects of existing plants. Thanks to these systems, treatment plant effluent can be reused for irrigation, process water or industrial recovery purposes. Micro disc filters are representatives of modern treatment technologies that bring together efficiency, sustainability and operational economy at the same point.
