One of the most important stages of wastewater treatment plants is the pre-treatment stage where solid particles, sand and oils in the water are removed. At this stage, the protection of pumps, valves and biological processes in the advanced stages of the system is targeted.
Wastewater from sewer systems, industrial lines or stormwater drains contains sand, gravel, oil, grease and floating materials. When these materials reach the treatment plant without being removed, they cause both wear and blockages in mechanical equipment and serious decreases in process efficiency. Package type sand-oil separator units are compact, easy to install, low energy consumption, long-lasting systems designed to prevent these problems. They perform both sand and oil separation processes in a single body, thus saving both space and operating costs.
The system generally consists of three basic chambers:
Wastewater is first taken into the inner chamber of the unit from the inlet channel. Here, the speed of the water is reduced to the optimum value that will allow the sand to settle. Thus, heavy particles carried by the water (sand, gravel, metal chips, etc.) settle to the bottom and separate from the rest of the water. A spiral type sand classifier or an aerated type system is generally used in the sand trap section.
In aerated systems, controlled air introduced into the water allows oils to rise to the surface and fine particles to remain in suspension. After this stage, the water passes to the second chamber, the oil separator chamber. Here, the oil and grease layer that rises to the surface is collected and removed by mechanical surface skimmers or automatic oil collection systems. The sand that settles in the unit is directed to the lower conical chamber and removed by a spiral auger transport system. It is possible to dewater the sand up to 90%. This provides great convenience in disposal or reuse stages.
It can be produced as a single piece, or manufactured modularly for large flows.
AISI 304 or 316 quality stainless steel
Sand removal efficiency can reach up to 90%, oil removal efficiency up to 95%.
Both sand and oil separation is performed in the same body, space requirement is minimal.
Aeration and auger systems operate with low-power motors.
Maintenance frequency decreases thanks to stainless steel or HDPE options.
Delivered as prefabricated, only connections are made on site.
In closed-type designs, connection to biofilter or activated carbon system can be provided with air intake line.
Oil skimmer, air supply and sand discharge systems can operate time-controlled or sensor-controlled.
Package sand-oil separator units serve as the first line of defense of treatment plants. Thanks to the settling of heavy particles and removal of surface oils, all equipment of the plant is protected and operating life is extended.
Thanks to its compact design, high separation efficiency, low energy requirement and modular structure, it is an ideal solution both in new plants and in the modernization of existing systems. Therefore, whether it is a small-scale industrial pre-treatment line or a large-volume municipal plant, package sand-oil separator units offer a reliable and sustainable solution in both cases.
